Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge Technology This Season.

Wimbledon court with video review system

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in implementing replay technology.

Replay technology are set to arrive at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Players will gain the right to question particular rulings from the chair umpire, following the practice already in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

The new system will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This development comes just a season following the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which terminated the longstanding tradition of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Players cannot to challenge the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the official to review specific decisions, including:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a shot touched an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Potential interference end of a rally.

Notably, there is no cap on the number of challenges a competitor can ask for.

Practical Application

A recent example occurred in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the review system against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a difficult call for the umpire, but believed his rival had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and determined Draper was guilty of interference, granting the point to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews aren't new for Grand Slams. It has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have the system implemented at all of its tournaments.

Further Updates

A further change at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of graphical cues on displays to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves instances where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain if a shot was in or out.

In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have further announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
