Pat Cummins has taken 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an stellar bowling average.
The Australian selection chief the selector has declared that pace spearhead Cummins will play a "major part" in this winter's historic rivalry.
There were concerns that Cummins might be unavailable due to a ongoing back issue that remained unresolved.
Initial reports from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding his involvement, with the five-Test series scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in Western Australia.
Bailey expressed that his recovery is on track and remained hopeful about his chances of taking part.
"We know that time is getting short and multiple considerations involved, not just the physical problem, but other factors as well," Bailey remarked.
"We're encouraged. We firmly believe that he'll participate in a major part. Ideally it's the first Test. If not, we'll reassess."
Past Concerns
He was sidelined the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India recently after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.
He has a history of spinal problems, with setbacks in multiple past seasons leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in four years.
The bowler mentioned he would be proactive in his approach in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the Ashes.
The selector indicated that it was unclear if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "pressing" for him to recover fully for the initial match.
Contingency Plans
Should Cummins not be fit, veteran batsman Smith will take over the captaincy.
All-rounder Cameron Green was excluded lately from the national team for their limited-overs matches against India as a safety move because of discomfort in his torso.
The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "in a good place to be ready to bowl."
"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to take part for the opening match as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.
"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs anyway. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, if it causes any delay for another day, the choice was made to adopt a safer strategy."
